Company Profile

We are the company that looks after the power line network in the central North Island region of New Zealand covering the King Country, Waitomo and Central Plateau.

Our area covers 13,700 km2.  It is the largest network area in New Zealand without a major urban centre within it. This makes us specialists in providing power to out-of-the-way places stretching from the iron sands on the west coast to the highest points in the North Island of New Zealand at the Turoa and Whakapapa skifields on Mount Ruapehu.

The company is 100% owned by the Waitomo Energy Services Customer Trust.  The company was formed on April 1 1999, as a result of the Government’s electricity industry reforms.  At that time we took over the former King Country Energy distribution network while King Country Energy purchased our two power stations and retail customer base.

Our head office is in Te Kuiti and we also have a presence in Taumarunui, Turangi, Ohakune, and Mangakino.

We have around 24,000 customers, including domestic consumers and holiday home owners through to major industries like NZ Steel and McDonald's Lime.

The company’s electricity distribution business operates in a regulated environment where its prices are controlled by the Commerce Commission.

The Lines Company has three subsidiary companies – Clearwater Hydro, John Deere Electrical and FCL – which all operate in an unregulated market environment.
